However one famous and significant discovery was also made by the already then famous scientist Albert Einstein in 1905 where he discussed the photoelectric effect and how light packets are capable of carrying energy. In 1839 French physicist Edmond Becquerel discovered the photovoltaic effect while experimenting with a cell made of metal electrodes in a conducting solution. He began registering patents for solar-powered engines in the 1860s.

A few decades later French mathematician Augustin Mouchot was inspired by the physicists work. Alexandre Edmond Becquerel is considered the father of solar panels having discovered how electricity is generated from sunlight in 1839. These engines became the predecessors of modern parabolic dish collectors.

Therefore some consider the true invention of solar panels to be tied to Daryl Chapin Calvin Fuller and Gerald Pearsons creation of the silicon photovoltaic PV cell at Bell Labs in 1954.
